Sermon Series

Upper Room Living in a Lower Room World

This series is a reflection on some of the most intimate and inspirational words in the Bible. Often called “The Upper Room Discourse,” these words from the Gospel of John are among the last Jesus spoke before he died. They were words spoken from an upper room in Jerusalem, words his disciples needed to hear, not just to help them process the grief they were about to experience, but to grapple with all that lay ahead. He knew they desperately needed a kind of “upper room vision” to sustain them and shape them to be his disciples. Much like those initial followers of Jesus, we too need those words of Jesus to infuse our lives with purpose, form us as his followers, and fill us with peace, as we walk through life limited to the constraints of this “lower room” world.

John 17:6-19
Jesus prays for his disciples’ protection; that they be in the world, but not of it. The purpose of this protection? To ensure that we experience true, deep joy in our identity in Christ, which no one can touch.

What was Jesus doing in the last moments before his arrest? He was praying for us. He wasn’t consumed with what was happening to him. He was sincerely interested in us and the quality of life we would live.

John 17:1-5
In his final words, Jesus prays for a glory that will last forever. True glory, the kind that doesn’t fade or falter, is born from suffering but built to share, transforming our lives into a meaningful mission for the good of others.

John 14:15-17, 25-27; 15:26; 16:7-15
How can we as modern people trust that the Bible, written by humans, is true? How can we believe all that it says about us and God? How do we find real peace, comfort, and courage in a world often punctuated with pain? The answer to these and many other questions lie in what Jesus taught his followers about the Holy Spirit.

John 14:1-14
As Jesus’ life neared its end, his disciples worried about what would come next. Jesus’ answer that he alone is “the way” is not some theoretical truth, but rather a deeply loving and practical response to the doubts of our hearts.
