Maundy Thursday, Communion, and the Coronavirus

The night before Jesus died he had dinner with his closest followers. That “last supper” gave rise to what we know of as the Eucharist (also called the Lord’s Supper and Holy Communion). Christians have often gathered on Thursday of Holy Week, called Maundy Thursday, to commemorate this important event and its lasting importance to us.

The Eucharist has been a vital part of worship at City Church from our inception. As we celebrate it together each Sunday, we remember what our Lord has done for us, we are spiritually nourished, and we are filled with the hope of a future feast in his eternal presence. In so doing, we proclaim our Lord’s death until he comes again.

As we’ve pivoted to online worship due to the COVID-19 crisis, we are admittedly in uncharted waters. We’ve been grappling with what communion looks like in this time of only being able to gather virtually, striving to maintain the integrity of the sacrament while using digital means to provide our church family with all that is essential to Christian worship and spiritual formation. To that end, City Church will offer its first Maundy Thursday service as a time for us to gather virtually, learn more about Maundy Thursday, and celebrate the Eucharist together.
